The community of Ogden is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 16-year-old Mason Caballero, a beloved student of Ben Lomond High School, who died after being shot near the school on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
According to the Ogden Police Department, the shooting occurred around 2:45 p.m. near 5th Street and Gramercy Avenue, shortly after students had been dismissed for the day. Investigators confirmed that the incident did not happen on school property.
After being shot, Mason reportedly made his way toward Ben Lomond High School seeking help. School staff and a resource officer immediately rendered first aid before emergency responders arrived. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
Ben Lomond High School Principal Velden Wardle released a heartfelt statement Tuesday evening, confirming the loss:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that the student has passed away as a result of their injuries. Out of respect for the student’s family and because this remains an active police investigation, we are unable to release additional details at this time.”
Superintendent Luke Rasmussen joined in expressing condolences to the Caballero family:
“Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and all who are grieving this devastating loss. We mourn together as a school community.”
Out of precaution, nearby Highland Junior High School and East Ridge Elementary temporarily entered “secure protocol” during the police response, keeping students indoors until officials confirmed there was no ongoing threat.
Authorities have not yet made any arrests or released information about the suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Mason’s death has deeply shaken his family and everyone who knew him. A GoFundMe page set up by his relatives shared that Mason “took his last breath on his big brother’s birthday,” and described him as “the sweetest boy you can think of — funny, outgoing, and full of life.”
His aunt, Leslie Caballero, and her family are now facing unimaginable grief and financial stress as they prepare to lay him to rest.
Mason’s sister, Oaklie Payne, wrote a touching tribute:
“Mason Caballero was a hardworking, funny young man with the biggest heart. He cherished his family deeply, especially his little brother Kashton, who looked up to him in every way. Mason loved camping trips with his grandparents, shopping with his mom, and working alongside his dad. He was always respectful and never missed a chance to help his grandma cook or lend a hand in the yard.”
She continued,
“Mason brought laughter and joy to his older siblings and valued every moment with those he loved. His kindness, his ability to make others smile, and his willingness to help anyone will be remembered forever.”
Friends and classmates describe Mason as a bright, kind, and humorous young man who lit up every room he walked into. He was known for his respectfulness, his work ethic, and his strong bond with family — particularly his younger brother, who now mourns the loss of his biggest role model.
Mason’s passing has left a hole in the hearts of many — from his school community to his close-knit family. His loved ones are finding comfort in remembering his laughter, warmth, and love for life.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been launched to help cover funeral and memorial expenses, allowing Mason’s family to focus on grieving and healing during this difficult time.
“No amount of money will bring him back,” the family shared, “but your support will reduce the stress and help us honor Mason’s beautiful life.”
The Ogden Police Department is urging anyone with information or doorbell camera footage near 500 North and Gramercy Avenue to come forward. Detectives are still working to identify the person responsible for the shooting.
The community is rallying behind the Caballero family, with vigils and online tributes pouring in. Messages of prayer and solidarity continue to flood social media, as Ogden remembers a young life lost far too soon.
